A Conversation on Industry Growth, Leadership, and Honoring Legacy

Austin, Texas – The latest episode of the Driven by DCKAP podcast features Eric Hoplin, President & CEO of the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW), in a discussion with host Karthik Chidambaram, Founder & CEO of DCKAP. Recorded live at the NAW Executive Summit in Washington, D.C., this episode dives into the state of the distribution industry, economic trends, and NAW’s evolving role in supporting its members.

Key Highlights

  • Industry Growth and Projections – NAW’s acquisition of MDM and its economic forecasts indicate a projected 6.2% growth in distribution for 2025.
  • Leadership and Strategy – Hoplin shares his approach to preparing for industry events and interviews, emphasizing the importance of engagement and messaging.
  • Honoring a Legacy – NAW introduced the Dirk Van Dongen Lifetime Achievement Award and a public policy fellowship to commemorate the former CEO’s impact.

A Look Ahead: Growth and Industry Trends

NAW’s acquisition of MDM has strengthened its ability to provide data-driven insights to its members. Partnering with the University of Colorado and other experts, MDM’s research projects a robust 6.2% growth in the distribution sector for 2025.

“Our members have been innovating, and we’re now seeing the results of that effort,” said Hoplin. “Additionally, there’s optimism that Washington will introduce policies that make it easier to do business in America.”

The Art of Leadership and Engagement

Hoplin also shared insights into his leadership approach, detailing how he prepares for keynotes and industry events. He emphasized the importance of strong teams and delivering compelling messaging.

“My role is to rally the industry around critical issues,” he explained. “When I’m on stage, my goal is to keep every eye on me—to ensure that our members leave feeling informed and motivated.”

Honoring Dirk Van Dongen’s Legacy

NAW continues to recognize industry leaders through its Distributor’s Deliver Award and, this year, established the Dirk Van Dongen Lifetime Achievement Award to honor the late former CEO, who served as NAW’s CEO for 41 years. The inaugural recipient, Stan Bergman, CEO of Henry Schein, was recognized for his contributions to public health initiatives and the distribution industry.

“Dirk was a champion for free markets and capitalism,” said Hoplin. “With this fellowship, we’re ensuring that NAW can continue advocating for the industry through research-backed policy initiatives.”

Looking to the Future

As NAW continues its mission to support distributors, the organization remains committed to innovation, advocacy, and community building. Through new research initiatives, expanded engagement, and strategic partnerships, NAW aims to equip its members with the insights and tools needed to thrive in an evolving industry.
